Each year, companies spend billions on training, yet Asian Americans still get left behind. How is JOYOUS different?

Many of us were brought up believing that if we just get into a top college and then work super hard, we’ll make it. I call it the Asian American Success Formula: 

HARVARD + HARD WORK = SUCCESS

So, our parents sacrificed, so hard, to get us all those chess lessons, SAT prep classes, extra tutoring. We thought that if we could just into a top university – we’d be all set to soar.

The only problem with the Asian American playbook is that it is 100%, totally wrong. Being super educated and working super hard will get you only to the “Individual Contributor” level, at the bottom of the pyramid.

And that’s where you’ll be stuck, unless you build “Emotional Intelligence” ("EQ" or "EI"), a set of skills that put together basically mean that you deeply understand yourself and others.

You see, if you’re a Worker Bee, you may need to work with just one person, your boss. If you move up just one level, to Manager, suddenly, you’ll have a boss, and peers to the side, and direct reports below you. Every level move up from there, the number of people you’ll need to work with will multiply.

That’s why EQ is the #1 thing that companies seek when choosing leaders. I know, because I used to do the choosing. For seven years, I worked as an executive search consultant to Fortune 500 companies.

Many of us have underdeveloped EQ skills because growing up, we focused only on gaining external milestones - winning chess competitions, earning top grades. We got the message that our ideas don’t matter, our feelings don’t matter,

The good news is that unlike IQ, your emotional intelligence changes dynamically throughout your life, and you can develop your emotional intelligence skills to greatly benefit your career and life.

But for Asian Americans to succeed, we can become exceptional leaders and still be blocked by racism and exclusion. That's why we also show you how to identify and counter unconscious bias.
